Saraswata Choornam – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage
Saraswata Choornam or Saraswatha Churnam is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the form of powder. It is used in improving intelligence, grasping power, memory, talking abilities, etc…This powder is said to be prepared by Lord Brahma for the one who has low intelligence, weak memory, and disturbed mind.
Ingredients of Saraswata Choornam
- Kushta (Saussurea lappa) – 1 part
- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) – 1 part
- Saindhava (Rock Salt) – 1 part
- Ajamoda (Trachyspermum roxburghianum) – 1 part
- Jiraka Dwe
1. Shwetha Jiraka (Cuminum cyminum) – 1 part
2. Krishnajiraka (Nigella sativa) – 1 part
- Trikatu
1. Shunti (Zingiber officinalis) – 1 part
2. Maricha (Piper nigrum) – 1 part
3. Pippali (Piper longum) – 1 part
- Patha (Cyclea peltata) – 1 part
- Mangalyapushpi/Shankhapushpi (Clitorea ternatea) – 1 part
- Vacha (Acorus calamus)
- Brahmi swarasa(fresh juice of Bacopa monnieri )
Preparation of Saraswata Choornam
All the above-said ingredients (1 to 8) are taken in equal quantity and crushed to make powder. To this equal quantity of Vacha powder is taken and mixed. To this mixture, the fresh juice of Brahmi is added and triturated in a vessel three times and then it is dried and made powder this is called Saraswata Choornam can be stored for use.

- Smriti sampatthi (memory power)

Mode of use, Dosage, and Adjuvants
According to classics, it is said that 1 Masha (one gram) powder is mixed with 6 gms of ghee and 12 gms of honey made to a paste and should be licked for seven days. In general 5 to 10 gms once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.
It is used in the treatment of psychosis, loss of concentration, anxiety, mania, epilepsy, MDP, Depression, irritability, low intelligence, loss of memory, disorders of speech and anemia, etc.
Saraswata Choornam according to Sahasrayoga
Ingredients
- Viswa/Shunti (Zingiber officinale)
- Ajamoja (Trachyspermum roxburghianum)
- Rajani ( Curcuma longa)
- Darvi/Daru haridra (Berberis aristata)
- Saindhava (Rock salt)
- Ugra/Vacha (Acorus calamus)
- Yashtyahwa (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
- Kushta (Saussurea costus)
- Magadhodbhava/Pippali (Piper longum)
- Jiraka (Cuminum cyminum)
Preparation:
Prepare the powders with the above-said drugs taken in the specified quantity and administer internally with ghee in the early morning.

- Vakvishuddhi (clear talk)
Mode of use, Dosage, and Adjuvants
In general, it is advised 3 to 10 gms once or twice daily or as directed by the physician along with Ghee.
