Bhagotharam Gulika – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage
Bhagotharam Gulika or Bhagottaram Gulika is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the form of a tablet. It is used in treating vata predominant headache, pita predominant headache, kapha predominant headache, and headache due to head injury. It is used as an external application over the forehead in the form of paste using various liquid materials.
Ingredients of Bhagotharam Gulika
- Sahasravedhi (?Ferula assafoetida) – 1 part
- Indra reta- 2 parts
- Kalabha gudha- 3 parts
- Kataka (strychnos potatorum)- 4 parts
- Nirada sara- 5 parts
- Chandana (santalum album) – 6 parts
- Dhatriphala (Emblica officinalis) – 7 parts
- Ambhoda (Cyperus rotundus) – 8 parts
- Ambhasa- 9 parts
- Nalada/Ushira (andropogon muricatus) – 10 parts
- Nayaka/Kumari (aloe veera)- 11 parts
- Turushka/?shallaki (Boswellia serrata)- 12 parts
Drava dravyas (liquid materials)
- Kanya (juice of Aloe vera)
- Mandukaparni (juice of Centella asiatica)
- Indra lata
- Brihati (juice of Solanum indicum)
Preparation of Bhagotharam Gulika
All the drugs are taken and powdered in the specified quantity. Then the powders are mixed together and ground with juices of Kanya, mandukaparni, indralata and brihati. This ground paste is then rolled into pills in the size of a finger and dried. These pills are stored for use as an external application.
Indications of Bhagotharam Gulika
- Vataja shirashula (vata predominant headaches)
- Pittaja shirashula (pitta predominant headaches)
- Kaphaja shirashula (kapha predominant headaches)
Mode of use, Dosage, and Adjuvant
Bhagotharam Gulika is made a paste by grinding with stanya (breast milk) for vata predominant headaches, in pitta predominant headaches it is used grinding with ghee, In kapha predominant headaches it is ground with coconut milk and applied. Bhagotharam Gulika can be applied over the center of the head if required.
