Vasishtha Rasayanam – Ingredients, Uses and Dosage

Vasishtha Rasayanam is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the jam form. It is mainly used in treating cough or allergic respiratory diseases. It has more properties than Agasthya Rasayanam. This leham can be used at any season without much dietary restriction. It should be carefully prepared and used as it contains Bhallataka otherwise it may cause an allergic reaction.

This is also used in treating wrinkles, untimely greying of hairs, bestows color, lifespan, and strength, cures the five types of cough, Debility, Dyspnoea, Hiccup, Intermittent fever, Diabetes, Abdominal tumors, Irritable bowel syndrome, Haemorrhoids/Piles, diseases of the heart, Anorexia, Nasal catarrh.

This rasayana has composed by Sage Vasishta hence the name Vasishtha Rasayanam and one of the best rejuvenative tonic.

Ingredients of Vasishtha Rasayanam

Kashaya Dravya (materials for decoction)

  1. Dashamoola
    1. Bilwa (Aegle marmelos) – 1 pala (48gms)

    4. Shyonaka (Oroxylum Indicum) – 1 pala (48gms)

    6. Shalaparni (Desmodium gangeticum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    7. Prushnaparni (Uraria picta) – 1 pala (48gms)

  1. Guda/Jaggery (Saccharum officinarum) – 1 Tula (4.800 kgs)

Drava Dravya (liquid materials)

  1. Thila Thaila (oil of Sesamum indicum) – 1 Prastha (768 ml)
  2. Ghruta (Cows Ghee/Clarifed butter) – 1 Prastha (768 ml)
  3. Dhatri Swarasa (Phyllanthus emblica) – 1 Prastha (768 ml)

Prakshepaka Dravya (powders to be added)

  1. Pippali (Piper longum) – 1 kudava (192 gms)
  2. Trijataka
    1. Ela (Elletaria cardamomum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    2. Twak (Cinnamomum verum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    3. Patra (Cinnamomum tamala) – 1 pala (48gms)

Preparation of Vasishtha Rasayanam

A suitable vessel is taken and the drugs mentioned for decoction are taken together in a specified quantity. Water is taken 8 times of the quantity of the decoction materials and boided to prepare the decoction. When the Yava is coocked well the decoction is filtered.

The Haritaki is taken out and cooked again adding jaggery along thila thaila, ghee and Amalaki juice. This is heated till the mixture becomes a semisolid in nature and allowed to cool down. Once it cools Honey along with other powders are added and mixed well.

It is then transfered into a old mud pot and kept concealed in a heap of corn for one month. After a month it is taken out and used in the similar to Agasthya Rasayanam

Indications of  Vasishtha Rasayanam

It is said that Vasishtha Rasayanam is more effective than the Agasthya Rasayanam.

  1. Vali – wrinkles
  2. Palita – untimely greying of hairs
  3. Varna ayu bala vardhana – bestows colour, lifespan and strength
  4. Panchakasa – cures the five types of cough
  5. Kshaya – Debility
  6. Shwasa – Dyspnoea
  7. Hidhma/Hikka – Hiccup
  8. Vishama jwara– Intermittent fever
  9. Meha/Prameha – Diabetes
  10. Gulma – Abdominal tumours
  11. Grahani -Irritable bowel syndrome
  12. Arshas – Haemorrhoids/Piles
  13. Hrudroga – diseases of the heart
  14. Aruchi – Anorexia
  15. Peenasa– Nasal catarrh

Dosage and Adjuvant:

In general it is advised 5 to 20 gms once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.

It can be conumed in all the season with out any restriction.

How to use Vasishtha Rasayanam:

According to the text it is advised to consume two haritaki size per day.
