Takrarishta – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage
Takrarishta or Takrarishtam is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the form of arishta (fermented liquid). It is used in conditions like swelling in the anal region, itching, and pain in the anal region. It also helps in increasing digestive fire, improves taste, increases complexion, facilitates the normal movements of vata and kapha and increases strength.
Ingredients of Takrarishta
Choorna dravya (powders)
- Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Upakunjika (Nigella Sativa) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Ajaji (Cuminum cyminum) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Hapusha (Juniperus communis) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Pippali dwaya
1. Pippali (Piper longum) – 1 pala (48gms)
2. Gaja Pippali (Scindapsus officinalis) – 1 pala (48gms) - Kaaravi (Carum carvi) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Granthika/Pippali moola (root of Piper longum) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Sathi (Hedychium spicatum) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Yavani (Trachyspermum ammi) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Agni/Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) – 1 pala (48gms)
- Yavanika (Trachyspermum ammi) – 1 pala (48gms)
Drava dravya (liquid material)
- Takra (buttermilk) – 4 pala (192 gms)
Preparation of Takrarishta
All the ingredients mentioned for making powders are to be taken. Then these herbs are crushed and made powders. The powders are taken in equal quantity and mixed with buttermilk. This mixture is then transferred to ghee smeared earthen pot and sealed well. This has to be kept without disturbing till the ingredients get fermented properly ie when it attains the perceptible sour and pungent taste. Then this mixture is taken out filtered and stored for use.

- Kapha Vata anulomana (facilitates the normal movements of vata and kapha )
- Guda Shwayathu (reduces swelling in the anal region)
- Guda Kandu (reduces itching in the anal region)
- Gudarti (reduces pain in the anal region)
- Bala vardhana (improves the strength)
Mode of use, Dosage, and Adjuvant
Takrarishta is generally advised 10 to 30 ml once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.

- Yavani (Trachyspermum ammi) – 3 phala (144 gms)
- Amalaki (emblica officinalis) – 3 phala (144 gms)
- Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)- 3 phala (144 gms)
- Maricha (Piper nigrum) – 3 phala (144 gms)
- Pancha lavana
1. Saindhava (Chloride of Sodium) – 1 phala (48 gms)
2. Samudra Lavana (Sodi muris) – 1 phala (48 gms)
3. Sauvarcha lavana(Unaqua Sodium Chloride) – 1 phala (48 gms)
4. Romaka lavana (Sambhar Salt) – 1 phala (48 gms)
5. Bida Lavana (Ammonium Salt) – 1 phala (48 gms) - Takra – 1 adhaka (3.072 gms)
Preparation of Takrarisham
All the ingredients are taken and made powder separately then the buttermilk is taken in specified quantity.
Then all the ingredients are mixed together and stirred well and poured to a mud pot and sealed tightly. This should be kept without disturbing for fermentation. Once the fermentation gets completed it should be filtered and stored for use.
Mode of use, Dosage, and Adjuvant
Takrarishta is generally advised 12 to 24ml once or twice daily or as directed by the physician along with the equal quantity of water.
