Ushirasava

Ushirasava or Ushirasavam is an ayurvedic alcoholic preparation. It is used in pitta predominant and raktaja conditions. It is also consumed to cool the body in the summer season. It is beneficial in Anemia, Skin diseases, Diabetes, Piles, Worm infestation, Swelling, edema etc…

Ingredients Ushirasava:

Madhura Dravya (Sweetening substances)

  1. Sharkara (sugar) – 1 tula (4.800gms)
  2. Madhu (Honey) – 1/2 tula (2.400gms)

Drava Dravya (Liquid materail)

  1. Jala (water) – 2 drona (24.576 liters)

Prakshepaka Dravya (Powders to be added)

  1. Ushira (Vetiveria Zizanioides)  – 1 pala (48gms)
  2. Balaka/Netrabala (Pavonia Odorata) – 1 pala (48gms)
  3. Padma (Prunus cerasoides) – 1 pala (48gms)
  4. Kashmarya/Gambhari (Gmelina Arborea) – 1 pala (48gms)
  5. Nilamutpala (Nymphaea Stellata) – 1 pala (48gms)
  6. Priyangu (Callicarpa Macrophylla) – 1 pala (48gms)
  7. Padmaka (Prunus cerasoides) – 1 pala (48gms)
  8. Lodhra (Symplocos Racemosa) – 1 pala (48gms)
  9. Manjishta (Rubia Cordifolia) – 1 pala (48gms)
  10. Dhanvayasaka — Fagonia cretica – 1 pala (48gms)
  11. Patha (Cissampelos pareira) – 1 pala (48gms)
  12. Kiratatikta (Swertia chirata) – 1 pala (48gms)
  13. Nyagrodha (Ficus bengalensis) – 1 pala (48gms)
  14. Udumbara (Ficus racemosa) – 1 pala (48gms)
  15. Shati/Karcura (Hedychium spicatum) – 1 pala (48gms)
  16. Parpata (Fumaria parviflora) – 1 pala (48gms)
  17. Pundarika (Nelumbo nucifera) – 1 pala (48gms)
  18. Patola (Trichosanthes dioica) – 1 pala (48gms)
  19. Kanchanara (Bauhinia variegata) – 1 pala (48gms)
  20. Jambu (Syzygium cumini) – 1 pala (48gms)
  21. Shalmali niryasa/Mocharasa (Salmalia malabarica) – 1 pala (48gms)
  22. Draksha ( Vitis vinifera) – 20 pala (960 gms)
  23. Dhataki flowers (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 16 pala (768gms)

Preparation method of Ushirasava 

All the above-mentioned drugs have to be taken in specifed quantity. An earthen vessel which is fumigated with jatamamsi and maricha and smeared with ghee has to be taken. Then all the ingredients are added to the vessel and sealed properly.

The vessel has to be buried in the ground for a month duration. After a month time, it should be opened and the ingredients are filtered for use.

  • Rakta Pitta vinashana – helps in diseases related to Rakta and Pitta
  • Pandu – Anemia
  • Kushta – Skin diseases
  • Prameha – Diabetes
  • Arsha – Piles
  • Krimi – Worm infestation
  • Shotha – Swelling, edema
  • Dosage of Ushirasava
  1. In general 15 – 30 ml once or twice a day or as directed by the physician.
