Kumaryasava

Kumaryasava or Kumaryasavam is an ayurvedic alcoholic preparation. It is used to treat many diseases. The main ingredient is Kumari or aloe vera. It also contains loha bhasma and Swarna makshika bhasma. It is very useful in controlling the bleeding disorders in women.

Ingredients of Kumaryasava :

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substances)

  1. Guda/Jaggery – 100 pala
  2. Madhu/Honey – 50 pala

Drava Dravya (liquid material

  1. Kumari Swarasa (Aloe Barbadensis) – 1 drona

Prakshepa Choorna (powders to be added)

  1. Loha bhasma (incenerated iron) – 50 pala
  2. Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa)  – 8 pala
  3. Trikatu – 1/2 pala (24 grams)
    1. Shunti (Zingiber officinale)
    2. Maricha(Piper nigrum)
    3. Pippali(Piper longum)
  4. Lavanga (Syzygium aromaticum) – 1/2 pala
  5. Chaturjata – 1/2 pala
    1. Twak (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
    2. Ela (Elettaria cardamomum)
    3. Patra (Cinnamomum tamala)
    4. Nagakeshara (Mesua ferrea)
  6. Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) – 1/2 pala
  7. Pippalimoola (root of Piper longum) – 1/2 pala
  8. Vidanga (Embelia ribes) – 1/2 pala
  9. Gaja pippali (Sciandapsus officinalis)  – 1/2 pala
  10. Chavika (Piper chaba)  – 1/2 pala
  11. Hapusha  (Juniperus communis)  – 1/2 pala
  12. Dhanya (Coriandrum sativum)  – 1/2 pala
  13. Kramuka/betelnut  (Acacia catechu)  – 1/2 pala
  14. Katurohini (Pichrohiza Kurroa)  – 1/2 pala
  15. Musta (Cyperus rotundus)  – 1/2 pala
  16. Triphala  – 1/2 pala

  23. Pushkara moola (lnula racemosa) – 1/2 pala
  24. Bala dwaya – 1/2 pala
    1. Bala (Sida cordifolia)
    2. Atibala (Abutilon indicum)
  25. Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens)  – 1/2 pala
  26. Trikantaka/Gokushura (Tribulus terrestris) – 1/2 pala
  27. Shatapushpa (Anethum sowa) – 1/2 pala
  28. Hingupatri (Gardenia gummifera) – 1/2 pala
  29. Akallaka (Anacylus pyrethrum) – 1/2 pala
  30. Utingana (Blepharis edulis) – 1/2 pala
  31. Punarnava dwaya – 1/2 pala
    1. Rakta Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa)
    2. Shweta Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa)
  32. Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) – 1/2 pala
  33. Dhatumakshika (incenerated copper pyrites) – 1/2 pala

Procedure 

All the ingredients are mixed together and transfered to a ghee smeared vessel. This has to be kept for one month. After the fermmataion it has to be taken out and fileded for use.

Indications of Kumaryasava :

  1. Bala vardhana (Increases strength)
  2. Varnakara (increases color of the body)
  3. Agni deepana (improves the digestive power)
  4. Bramhana (nourishes the tissues)
  5. Rochana (improves taste)
  6. Vrushya (increases virility)
  7. Parinama shoola (alleviates pain in abdomen)
  8. Asthodara roga (helps in eight types of abdominal distension)
  9. Kshayam (cures depletion)
  10. Vimshati prameha (all types of diabetes)
  11. Udavarta (flatulence)
  12. Apasmruti (impaired memory)
  13. Mutrakrucdysuriaysurea)
  14. Apasmara (epilepsy)
  15. Shukra dosha (diseases of sperm)
  16. Ashmari (calculi)
  17. Krimi (worm infestation)
  18. Raktapitta (bleeding disorder)

Dosage of Kumaryasava :

According to the texts, Kumaryasava has advised 1/2 or 1 or 2 palas according to age and strength of the patient.

In general 15 to 30 ml is used or as directed by the physician.
