Dashamoola Haritaki – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage

Dashamoola Haritaki or Dashamoola Haritaki lehyam is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the form of jam. It is used in generalized edema, fever, genito-urinary diseases, splenomegaly, ascites, and hypertension, abnormal color change in the body, diabetes, breathing difficulty, loss of taste etc…It improves both digestive power and cellular metabolism. One of the most used medicine in correcting lifestyle diseases.

Ingredients of Dashamoola Haritaki

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substances)

  1. Guda/jaggery (Saccharum officinarum) – 1 tula (4.800 kgms)
  2. Madhu (honey) – 1/2 prastha (768 ml)

Drava dravya (liquid material)

  1. Dashamoola
    1. Bilwa (Aegle marmelos) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    2. Agnimantha (Premna obtusifolia) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    3. Gambhari (Gmelina arborea) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    4. Shyonaka (Oroxylum Indicum) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    5. Pathala (Stereospermum suaveolens) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    6. Shalaparni (Desmodium gangeticum) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    7. Prushnaparni (Uraria picta) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    8. Bruhati (Solanum Indicum) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    9. Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpous) – 10 pala (480 gms)
    10. Gokshura (Tribulus Terrestris) – 10 pala (480 gms)

Preparation of Dashamoola Haritaki

Dashamoola is crushed into small pieces and water is added and heated to prepare the decoction. Once the decoction is prepared it has to be filtered and stored.

100 numbers of Haritaki is added to the dashamoola decoction along with 1 Tula of jaggery and heated till it attains a semisolid state. Continuous stirring is necessary to prevent getting burnt.

Once the preparation becomes thick in consistency the other powdered materials are added and stirred well. Once it becomes cool honey is added and stirred well again and stored for use.

  1. Pravruddha Shopha (advanced oedema)
  2. Jwara (fever)
  3. Meha/Prameha (diabetes)
  4. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  5. Karshya (depletive disease)
  6. Ama vata (a varity of joint disease)
  7. Amla pitta (acidity/gastritis)
  8. Rakta pitta (bleeding dissorder)
  9. Vaivarnya (discolouration of the skin)
  10. Mutra roga (genito urinary diseases)
  11. Vata roga (vata predominent diseases)
  12. Shukra dosha (dissorders of sperm)
  13. Shwasa (dyspnea)
  14. Kasa (cough)
  15. Aruchi (tastelessness)
  16. Pleeha roga (splenic disorders)
  17. Gara (homicidal poisoning)
  18. Udara (enlargement of the abdomen)

Dosage and adjuvant:

In general, it is advised 5 to 20 gms once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.
