Bhringarajasava or Bhringarajasavam is an alcoholic preparation which has been mentioned for the treatment of tiredness caused due to emaciation of the body and also for gaining weight. It also acts as an aphrodisiac, bronchodilator, vatahara etc… 

Ingredients of Bhringarajasava

Drava dravya (Liquid material)

  1. Bhringaraja Rasa (fresh juice of Eclipta alba) -12.288 liters (1 drona)

Praksepaka choorna (powders to be added)

  1. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) -384g (1/2 prastha)
  2. Pippali (Piper longum) – 96g (2 pala)
  3. Jatiphala (Myristica fragrans) -12g (1 tola)
  4. Lavanga (Syzygium aromaticum)-12g (1 tola)
  5. Chaturjataka (1 tola each)
    1. Twak- Cinnamomum zeylanicum-12g
    2. Ela- Elettaria cardamomum-12g
    3. Patra- Cinnamomum tamala-12g
    4. Nagakeshara- Mesua ferrea-12g

Madhura dravya (sweating material)

  1. Guda (jaggery) -9.6kg (200 pala)

Preparation Method of Bhringarajasava

The bhringaraja rasa along with jaggery and haritaki is kept in a ghee smeared pot. To this add pippali, jatiphala, chaturajataka powders and seal the pot and kept for a fortnight. After a fortnight take out the liquid and preserve it after filtration.

  1. Dhatu kshaya (Emaciation of tissues)
  2. Five types of kasa (Cough)
  3. Vrishya
  4. Vajeekara
  5. Useful to treat weakness of all kinds.
  6. Kama vruddhi (Improves sexual vigor)
  7. Vandyatwa(useful in treating infertility)

Dose of Bhringarajasava

  1. 15 – 30 ml or as directed by the physician.
