Ingredients of Mustakarishta

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substance)

  1. Guda (Jaggery) – 3 tula ( 14.4 kg)

Drava Dravya (liquid material)

Decoction of

  1. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) – 2 tula (9.6kg)

Prakshepa Drvaya (powders to be added)

  1. Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 16 pala (768 gms)
  2. Yamani/Ajamoda (Trachyspermum ammi) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  3. Vishwa bheshjam/Shunti (Zingiber officinale) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  4. Maricha (Piper nigrum) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  5. Devapushpa/Naga kesara (Syzygium aromaticum) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  6. Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  7. Vahni/Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanicum) – 2 pala (96 gms)
  8. Jeeraka (Cuminum cyminum) – 2 pala (96 gms)

Preparation of Mustakarishta

First Musta (9.6 kg) has to be taken and made into coarse powder. Then the powder is mixed with 4 drona (49.152 liters) and boiled and reduced to 1/4 quantity (12.288 liters). Then the decoction is filtered.

To the decoction, the other ingredients like Jaggery and powders are added and mixed thoroughly.

This mixture has to be transferred fumigated ghee smeared earthen pot and sealed. This vessel has to kept in a closed room for a month. After one month it has to be filtered and ready for use.

Indications of Mustakarishta

  1. Ajeerna (indigestion)
  2. Agnimandhya (poor digestive power)
  3. Visuchika (gastro-enteritis)
  4. Grahani (frequent loose and hard stools)

Dosage :

  • In general 15 – 30 ml or as directed by the physician.
