Lohasava

Lohasava or Lohasavam is an ayurvedic alcohol preparation. It is commonly used in treating anemia. It contains loha (Purified Iron). It is very effective in increasing Hb%  content in blood. It also helps in proper functioning of Liver and Spleen.

Ingredients of Lohasava

Madhura Dravya (Sweetening substance)

  1. Madhu/Honey – 64 pala (3.072 kg)
  2. Guda/Jaggery –  1 tula (4.400 kg)

Drava Dravya (Liquid Material)

  1. Jala/Water – 2 drona (24.576 liers)

Prakshepaka choorna (Powders to be added)

  1. Loha Choorna (Purified Iron) – 4 pala (192 gms)
  2. Trikatu – 4 pala (192 gms)
    1. Shunti (Zingiber officinale)
    2. Maricha(Piper nigrum)
    3. Pippali(Piper longum)
  3. Triphala – 4 pala (192 gms)
    1. Hareetaki (Terminalia chebula)
    2. Vibhitaki (Terminalia belerica)
    3. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)
  4. Yavani/Ajamoda (Trachyspermum ammi) – 4 pala (192 gms)
  5. Vidanga (Embelia ribes) – 4 pala (192 gms)
  6. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) – 4 pala (192 gms)
  7. Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) – 4 pala (192 gms)
  8. Dhataki Kusuma (Woodfordia Fruticosa) – 20 pala (960 gms)

Preparation Method:

An earthen vessel with ghee smeared inside and fumigated with herbs is taken. To this vessel, all the ingredients like Honey, jaggery, water, and other powdered ingredients are added. Then all the contents of the vessel are properly mixed and then the vessel is sealed properly. The vessel is then kept in a closed room for a month. After a month the vessel is opened and liquid is filtered. The filtered liquid can be filled in small containers for use.

  1. Vahnikara/Agni deepana (increases digestive power)
  2. Pandu (Anemia)
  3. Shwayathu (Swelling)
  4. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  5. Udara (Ascites, abdominal fluid retention)
  6. Arshas (Piles)
  7. Kushta (Skin diseases)
  8. Pleehamaya (Slpeenic diseases)
  9. Kandu (Itching)
  10. Shwasa (Breathing difficulties)
  11. Kasa (Cough)
  12. Bhagandhara (Fissures)
  13. Arochaka (Anorexia)
  14. Grahani (frequent loose and hard stools)
  15. Hrudroga (cardiac diseases)

Dosage :

  1. In general 15 to 30 ml or as directed by the physician.

Important note:

  1. One has to very cautious while using Lohasava. As it contains Loha it may cause constipation in some patients. It is always better to be given along with Anulomaka dravya along with Lohasava.
