Chavikasavam or Chavikasava is an ayurvedic alcoholic preparation. It is used in treating Gulma, Diabetes etc…

Ingredients of Chavikasavam :

Kashaya Dravya (materials for preparing decoction)

  1. Chavya (Piper retrofractum) –  2.4 kg
  2. Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) – 1.2 kg
  3. Vashpika (Nigella sativa) – 480 gms
  4. Pushkaramoola (Inula racemosa) – 480 gms
  5. Shadgrantha/Vacha (Acorus calamus) – 480 gms
  6. Hapusha (Juniperus communis) – 480 gms
  7. Shati (Hedychium spicatum) – 480 gms
  8. Patolamoola (root of Trichosanthes dioica) – 480 gms
  9. Triphala – 480 gms
    1. Hareetaki (Terminalia chebula)
    2. Vibhitaki (Terminalia belerica)
    3. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)
  10. Yavani (Trachyspermum ammi)  – 480 gms
  11. Kutajatvak (bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica) – 480 gms
  12. Vishala (Citrullus colocynthis) – 480 gms
  13. Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum) – 480 gms
  14. Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata) – 480 gms
  15. Danti (Baliospermum montanum)  – 480 gms
  16. Krumighna/Vidanga (Embelia ribes) – 240 grams
  17. Musta (Cyperus rotundus)- 240 grams
  18. Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia)- 240 grams
  19. Devadaru (Cedrus deodara)- 240 grams
  20. Trikatu – 240 grams
    1. Shunti (Zingiber officinale)
    2. Maricha(Piper nigrum)
    3. Pippali(Piper longum)
  21. Jala(Water) – 98.304 liters (8 drona)

All the above-mentioned ingredients are crushed to coarse powder. Then the powders are mixed with water and boiled. The water content is boiled in mild flame till it reduces to 1 drona ie 12.288 liters.

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substance)

  1. Guda/Jaggery – 14.4 kg (300 pala)

Prakshepa Dravya (powders to be added)

  1. Dhataki(woodfordia fruticosa)  – 960 grams (20 pala) 
  2. Chaturjataka (384 grams)
    1. Twak (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)
    2. Ela (Elettaria cardamomum)
    3. Patra (Cinnamomum tamala)
    4. Nagakeshara (Mesua ferrea)
  3.  Lavanga (Syzygium aromaticum) – 48 grams each
  4. Trikatu – 48 grams each
    1. Shunti (Zingiber officinale)
    2. Maricha(Piper nigrum)
    3. Pippali(Piper longum)
  5. Kankola (Piper cubeba) – 48 grams each

All the ingredients are taken together in ghee smeared vessel and sealed. This has to be kept for one month as mentioned for asava preparation. After one month the liquid has to be filtered and used.

Indications of Chavikasavam:      

  1. Sarva Gulma Vikara (Abdominal related diseases)
  2. Prameha (Diabetes)
  3. Pratishyaya (Running nose, cold)
  4. Kshaya (Depletion)
  5. Kasa (Cough)
  6. Ashtila (Urinary obstruction)
  7. Vatashonita (gout)
  8. Udara (ascites, abdominal distension)
  9. Antravruddhi (Hernia, abdominal distension)

Dose of  Chavikasavam:

In the text, it has mentioned 4 pala’s ie  192 ml and says to consume in the morning (pratha kala).
