Varadi kashaya or Varadi kashayam is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation. It is one of the formulations from the Sahasrayoga text. It is indicated in Obesity(Sthoulya) and its complications. It is also found beneficial in prameha (diabetes). The Varadi kashaya has to be administered for a month along with honey in sthoulya.

Ingredients of Varadi Kashaya :

  1. Vara/Triphala
    1. Hareetaki (Terminalia chebula)
    2. Vibhitaki (Terminalia belerica)
    3. Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis)
  2. Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium)
  3. Agni/Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica)
  4. Patra/Loha Patra (Iron foils)
  5. Nisha/Haridra (Curcuma longa)

Preparation of Varadi Kashaya

All the ingredients are taken in the specified quantity and are crushed into small pieces. Then added with eight times of water and boiled till it reduced to one-fourth of the quantity. Then the decoction is filtered and used.

Indication of Varadi Kashaya :

  1. Sthoulya (obesity)

Though it contains iron, because of Triphala Choorna it does not cause constipation.

Adjuvant and Dosage :

The general dosage is 15 to 30 ml with three times of boiled and cooled water once or twice daily or as directed by the physician when you buy a ready-made kashayam bottle from an ayurvedic medical store or shop as they are concentrated preparations and should be diluted before you consume.

If one prepares freshly by taking raw herbs the classical dosage is one pala ie 48 ml.

This is generally taken with honey or any other suitable medohara adjuvants like vidangadi choorna, loha bhasma etc…

    • There are no known studies are available on the effect of Varadi Kashaya on Blood pressure. As it acts as medohara it may be beneficial for the patients who are having hypertension along with Obesity.
      Varadi kashaya dose the kapha shamana, meda/sthoulya hara, lekhaneeya in action.
