Kalyanaka Gulam – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage

Kalyanaka Gulam or Kalyanaka Guda/Kalyanaka Gudam/Kalyanaka Gula is an ayurvedic jam  (lehya) preparation. This is one of the Virechana (purgatory) preparation explained in the Kalpa stana of Astanga hrudaya. This lehya can be used at any season without any restrictions (pathya). It is also used in treating skin diseases, piles, Kamala (jaundice), abdominal tumors, prameha (diabetes) ascites, anal fissures, digestive problems, anemia, infertility etc..

Ingredients of Kalyanaka Gulam

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substance)

  1. Guda (Jaggery) – 1/2 Tula (2.400 kgms)

Drava Dravya (Liquid material)

  1. Amalaki Swarasa (fresh juice of  Emblica Officinalis) – 3 prastha (2.304 ml)
  2. Thila Thaila (sesame oil) – 8 pala (384 gms)

Prakshepaka Choorna (powders to be added at last)

  1. Vidanga (Embelia ribes) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  2. Pippali Moola (roots of Piper longum) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  3. Triphala
    1. Hareetaki (Terminalia chebula) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    2. Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    3. Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  4. Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  5. Chitraka ( Plumbago zeylanica) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  6. Maricha (Piper nigrum) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  7. Indrayava (seeds of Holarrhena antidysenterica) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  8. Jeeraka (Cuminum cyminum) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  9. Pippali (Piper longum) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  10. Gajapippali (Scindapsus Officinalis) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  11. Ajamoda (Trachyspermum ammi) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  12. Pancha Lavana
    1. Saindhava (Chloride of Sodium) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    2. Samudra Lavana (Sodi muris) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    3. Sauvarcha lavana(Unaqua Sodium Chloride) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    4. Romaka lavana  (Sambhar Salt) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
    5. Bida Lavana (Ammonium Salt) – 1 karsha (12 gms)
  13. Trivrit (Operculina turpethum) – 8 pala (384 gms)

Preparation of Kalyanaka Gulam

All the above-said ingredients are taken together in a specified quantity. Then it should be mixed thoroughly and heated in the mild fire till it attains the paka or semisolid state. It should be kept stirring well until the fire is put off.

Indications of Kalyanaka Gulam

  1. Kushta (skin diseases)
  2. Arsha (piles/Haemorrhoids)
  3. Kamala (jaundice)
  4. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  5. Meha (diabetes)
  6. Udara (ascite)
  7. Bhagandara (anal fissures)
  8. Grahani (digestive problems)
  9. Pandu (anemia)
  10. Pumsavana (able to have children)

Dosage of Kalyanaka Gulam

Though in reference there is no specific mention about the dosage, in general, it can be given 10 to 20 gms for an adult or as directed by the physician.

This lehyam can be taken at any season (sarva rututeshu yogikau) without much restriction on diet and lifestyle (pathya)
