Duralabharishtam – Ingredients, Preparation, Uses, and Dosage

Duralabharishtam or Duralabharishta is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation. It is used in conditions like piles/hemorrhoids, indigestion, decreased digestive power etc… It is more useful in bleeding piles and has more anulomana (normal movement of vata) property compared to Dantyarishtam.

Ingredients of Duralabharishtam

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substance)

  1. Sita/Sugar candy (Saccharum officinarum) – 100 pala (4.800 kgms)
  2. Makshika (Honey) – Q.S

Drava Dravya (liquid materials)

Kashaya (decoction) of

  1. Duralabha (Tragia involucrata) – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  2. Danti (Baliospermum montanum) – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  3. Patha (Cyclea peltata) – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  4. Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica)  – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  5. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)  – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  6. Vasa (Justicia beddomei) – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  7. Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica)  – 1 prastha (768 gms)
  8. Shunti (Zingiber officinale)- 1 prastha (768 gms)

Prakshepaka Dravya (powders to be added at last)

  1. Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 1 prastha (768 gms)

Kalka dravya (Materials for making a paste)

  1. Priyangu (Callicarpa macrophylla) – Q.S
  2. Pippali (Piper longum) – Q.S
  3. Chavyam (Piper mullesua) – Q.S
  4. Ghee (cows ghee) – Q.S

Preperation of Duralabharishtam

One prastha of duralabha along with one prsatha(each) of danti, patha, vijaya, Agni, vasa, amalaka, and nagara are crushed into small pieces. This is then mixed with one drona (12.288 liters) of water and boiled to prepare the decoction. The water has to be boiled and reduced to one-fourth. Then the decoction is filtered and kept.

Then to the decoction sugar candy are added and mixed well. This mixture is then transferred to a vessel smeared with a paste of priyangu, pippali, chavya, dhataki, ghee, and honey and has to be sealed well and kept undisturbed.

After a fortnight the vessel has to be opened and the liquid is filtered and can be stored for use.

Indication of Duralabharishtam

It is said to have similar qualities of Abhayarishtam.

  1. Agni vardhaka (increases digestive power)
  2. Gudaja/Arshas (piles/hemorrhoids)
  3. Grahani (a variety of digestive disorders/?IBS)
  4. Pandu (anemia)
  5. Kushta (skin diseases)
  6. Udara (abdominal enlargement)
  7. Gara (a variety of  poisoning)
  8. Jwara (fever)
  9. Shwayathu (edema)
  10. Pleeha (splenic disorders)
  11. Hrudroga (cardiac problems)
  12. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  13. Yakshma (depletive disorder/tuberculosis)
  14. Vami/Chardi (vomiting)
  15. Krimi (worm infestation)

Along with these qualities, it is more Anulomaka compared to Dantyarishtam

Dosage and Adjuvants:

In general, it is advised 15 to 30 ml once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.
