Dantyarishtam – Ingredients, Uses, and Dosage

Dantyarishtam or Dantyarishta is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation. It is used in hemorrhoids, dyspepsia, constipation, and ascites etc… It gives an excellent result in nonbleeding piles/ hemorrhoids.

This has more anulomaka property than the Abhayarishtam and should be avoided in pitta predominant and rakta predominant condition.

Ingredients of Dantyarishtam

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substances)

  1. Guda/jaggery (Saccharum officinarum) – 1 Tula  (4.400 kgms)

Drava dravya (liquid material)

Kashaya (decoction) of

  1. Danti (Baliospermum montanum) – 1 pala (48gms)
  2. Dashamoola
    1. Bilva (Aegle marmelos) – 1 pala (48gms)
    2. Agnimantha (Premna mucronata) – 1 pala (48gms)
    3. Shyonaka (Oroxylum indicum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    4. Patala (Stereospermum suaveolens) – 1 pala (48gms)
    5. Gambhari (Gmelina arborea) – 1 pala (48gms)
    6. Brihati (Solanum indicum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    7. Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    8. Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) – 1 pala (48gms)
    9. Shalaparni (Desmodium gangeticum) – 1 pala (48gms)
    10. Prishnaparni (Uraria picta) – 1 pala (48gms)
  3. Vara/Triphala
    1. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) – 1 pala (48gms)
    2. Vibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica) – 1 pala (48gms)
    3. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) – 1 pala (48gms)
  4. Agni/Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) – 1 pala (48gms)

Prakshepaka Dravya (powder to be added)

  1. Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) -1 prastha (768 gms)

Preperation of Dantyarishtam

Danti, Dashamoola, Vara and chitraka are taken one pala each and crushed into small pieces. Then this is added with  one drona 12.288 liters) of water and boiled to prepare the decoction. The water has to boiled and reduced to one fourth of the quantity. Once the decoction is ready it should be filtered and kept.

To the filtered decoction one Tula of jaggery and one prastha of dhataki flowers are added and transferred to a ghee smeared vessel. This has to be sealed properly and kept for fermenting in a undisturbed place. After fifteen days it should be opened and the contents are filtered again and stored for use.

Indications of Dantyarishtam

It is said that Dantyarishtam has almost all the properties of Abhayarishtam. They are

  1. Agni vardhaka (increases digestive power)
  2. Gudaja/Arshas (piles/hemorrhoids)
  3. Grahani (a variety of digestive disorders/?IBS)
  4. Pandu (anemia)
  5. Kushta (skin diseases)
  6. Udara (abdominal enlargement)
  7. Gara (a variety of  poisoning)
  8. Jwara (fever)
  9. Shwayathu (edema)
  10. Pleeha (splenic disorders)
  11. Hrudroga (cardiac problems)
  12. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  13. Yakshma (depletive disorder/tuberculosis)
  14. Vami/Chardi (vomiting)
  15. Krimi (worm infestation)

Along with these qualities, it is more Anulomaka compared to Abhayarishtam.

Dosage and Adjuvants:

In general 15 to 30 ml once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.
