Chyawanprasha Ingredients, Preparation, Indications, and Benefits
Chyawanprasha or Chyawanprasham/Chyawanprash is an ayurvedic rejuvenating medicine. This preparation is named after the sage “Chyavana” because he gained his youthfulness by consuming this leham when he was suffering from old age. It helps in the prevention of diseases by increasing the immunity.
Ingredients of Chyawanprasha
Drava Dravya (Liquid ingredients)
- Thila Thaila (Sesame Oil) – 12 pala (576 gms)
- Ghruta (Cows ghee) – 12 pala (576 gms)

- Thugaksheeri (exudate of Bambusa Bambos) – 4 pala (192 gms)
- Pippali (Piper longum) – 2 pala (96 gms)
- Chaturjata
1. Twak (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) – 1/2 pala (24 gms)
2. Ela (Elettaria cardamomum) – 1/2 pala (24 gms)
3. Patra (Cinnamomum tamala) – 1/2 pala (24 gms)
4. Nagakeshara (Mesua ferrea) – 1/2 pala (24 gms)
Preparation of Chyawanprasha
The decoction is prepared using Dashamoola, Bala , Musta, Jivaka, Rishabhaka, Utpala, Parna dwaya,Pippali, Shringi, Meda Truti,Jeevanthi , Jongaka, Draksha, Pushkara moola, Chandana, Shathi, Punarnava, Dwikakoli, Kaakanasa , Amrita dwaya, Vidaari, Vrusha mula taken 1 pala each.
These ingredients are mixed with 1 drona (12.288 liters) of water and boiled till it reduces to 1/4 quantity. Then this has to be filtered and 500 no’s of Amalaki are to be added and boiled.
When the decoction is reduced to 1/4 the Amalaki are taken out and the pulp of the fruit is removed and seed are separated.
The separated Amalaki pulp is fried in a pan adding 12 pala of Ghee and Tila Thaila, to this 1/2 tula of sugar candy is added and heated till it attains a semisolid paste.
Then it must be allowed to cool down. Then honey and powders of Thugaksheeri , Pippali, Chaturjata are added and stirred well and stored for the use.

How to use Chyawanprasha?
According to Ayurveda texts it should be consumed in a prescribed dose staying in a special place consuming the specific diet to get the desired benefit.
Dosage of Chyawanprasha
In general 10 – 20 gms per day once or twice or as directed by the physician.
