Mathala Rasayanam – Ingredients Uses and Dosage

Mathala Rasayanam or Mathala Rasayana is an ayurvedic medicinal preparation in the form of jam. It is used in treating cough, cold, Chronic respiratory diseases, Bronchitis, Asthma, emaciating chronic disease, hiccups, abscess, ulcers in intestines, reduced digestive power, vomiting, abdominal lump, bloating, chest injury, anorexia, cardiac pain, splenic diseases, liver diseases, bleeding disorders, speaking difficulties, other diseases and fever.

Ingredients of Mathala Rasayanam

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substances)

  1. Sita (sugar) (Saccharum officinarum) – 12 pala (576 grams)
  2. Guda/jaggery (Saccharum officinarum) – 12 pala (576 grams)
  3. Khanda Sita/sugar candy (Saccharum officinarum) – 12 pala (576 grams)
  4. Makshika (Honey) – 6 pala (288 ml)

Drava Dravya (liquid materials)

  1. Dadima/pomegranate rasa (fresh juice of Punica granatum) – 6 pala (288 ml)
  2. Stanya (breast milk or cows milk) – 6 pala (288 ml)
  3. Atarusha/Vasa rasa (fresh juice of Adhatoda vasica) – 6 pala (288 ml)
  4. Ardraka rasa (fresh juice of Zingiber officinale) – 6 pala (288 ml)

Prakshepaka Dravya (powders to be added)

  1. Rala/Sarjarasa – Copal Tree resin (Vateria indica) – 1 karsha (12 gms)

Preparation of Mathala Rasayanam

A suitable vessel is taken, and the liquid materials along with sugar, jaggery and, sugar candy are added and mixed well. This mixture is heated till it attains the semisolid state and then the other powders are added and stirred well. When it mixed well it should be allowed to cool down. Once it becomes cool, honey is added and stirred again. Once it mixes well it can be stored for use.

  9. Gulma (abdominal tumors)
  10. Kshata (chest injury)
  11. Arochaka (anorexia)
  12. Hrit Ruja (cardiac pain)
  13. Pleeha roga (splenic diseases)
  14. Yakrit roga (liver diseases)
  15. Raktapitta (bleeding disorders)
  16. Swarakshaya (speaking difficulties)
  17. Upadrava (other conditions)
  18. Jwara (fever)

Dosage of Mathala Rasayanam

In general 5 to 15 gms once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.

      In the initial stage of cold and cough, this lehyam is not advisable. This preparation is a rasayana yoga and has to be given only after considering the state and stage of the disease.
      The general dosage for an adult is 5 to 15 gms per day once or twice or as directed by the physician.
