Kutaja Phanita – Ingredients, Preparation, Indication, and Dosage

Kutaja Phanita is an Ayurvedic medicinal preparation used in treating Irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, amoebic dysentery, hemorrhoids.

Ingredients of Kutaja Phanita

Kashaya Dravya (materials for preparing decoction)

  1. Kutaja twak (bark of Holarrhena antidysentrica) – 1 Tula (4.800kgms)
  2. Ghee (Cows ghee) – 20 pala (960 gms)

Kalka Dravya (materials used to make paste)

  1. Tharkshiasaila (Iron pyrite) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  2. Katutraya
    1. Shunti (Zingiber officinale) – 1 pala (48 gms)
    2.Maricha (Piper nigrum) – 1 pala (48 gms)
    3. Pippali (Piper longum) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  3. Rodhra Dwaya
    1. Shweta Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) – 1 pala (48 gms)
    2. Lodhra (Symplocos cochinchinensis var. laurina) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  4. Mocharasa (Bombax ceiba) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  5. Bala (Sida cordifolia) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  6. Bala Dadima twak (Punica granatum) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  7. Bilwa (tender fruits of Aegle marmelos) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  8. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  9. Samanga (Mimosa pudica) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  10. Dhataki Phala (Woodfordia fructicosa) – 1 pala (48 gms)
  11. Kutaja twak (bark of Holarrhena antidysentrica) – 10 pala (48 gms)

Madhura Dravya (sweetening substance)

  1. Guda/Jaggery (Saccharum officinarum) – 30 pala (1.440 kgs)

Preparation of Kutaja Phanita

One Tula of kutaja bark is added with 1 Drona (12.288 kgs) of Water and boiled. When the contents are reduced to 1/8 part the vessel is taken off from the fire and decoction is filtered.

To this the paste of Tarkshyasaila, katutraya, rodhra dwaya, mocharasa, bala, dadima twak, tender bilwa fruits, musta, samanga and dhataki phala are added along with 10 palas of bark of kutaja is added.

Then 30 pala of jaggery, 20 pala of ghee are added and heated steering properly till it attains a semisolid paste. Once it reached semisolid state it should be removed from the fire and kept for cooling.

Then it should be covered with a proper lid and kept in a heap of rice bran for a fortnight. Then it is ready for use.

  1. Sarva Arsha (all Hemorrhoids)
  2. Grahani (?Irritable bowel syndrome)
  3. Shwasa (Breathlessness)
  4. Kasa (Cough)

Dosage of Kutaja Phanita

In general 10 – 20 gms once or twice daily or as advised by the physician.
