Chandanadi Thailam or Chandanadi Thaila is an ayurvedic medicated oil. It is also known as Valiya Chandanadi Thailam or Maha Chandanadi Thaila. It is used in treating burning sensation, syncope, Bleeding disorders, menstrual problems, Pitta dosha predominant disease and herpes.

Ingredients of Chandanadi Thailam

Drava Dravya (Liquid material)

  1. Chandana (Santalum album) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  2. Udichya (Vetivera zizanioides) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  3. Nalada/Jatamamsi (Nardostachys jatamamsi) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  4. Dhatri/Amalaki (Embelica officinalis) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  5. Yashtyahwa/Yashtimadhu ( ‎Glycyrrhiza Glabra) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  6. Sariba (Hemidesmus indicus) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  7. Bala (Sida cordifolia) – 10 pala (480 gms)
  8. Jala/Water – 1 drona (12.288 liters)

Prepare the kashaya of the above-said ingredients by reducing it to 1/4 quantity ie 3.072 liters.

  1. Ksheera(Milk) – 1 prastha (768 liters)
  2. Brahmi Swarasa (juice of Bacopa monnieri) – 1 prastha (768 liters)
  3. Shatavari Swarasa (juice of Asparagus racemosus) – 1 prastha (768 liters)
  4. Kumari swarasa (juice of Aloe vera) – 1 prastha (768 liters)
  5. Narikelambu (coconut water ) – 1 prastha (768 liters)

Kalka Dravya (Materials used for making the paste)

  1. Prapoundarika (Nymphaea lotus) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  2. Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  3. Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  4. Padma kesara (stamen of Nelumbo nucifera) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  5. Kumuda (Nymphaea alba) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  6. Utpala (Nelumbo nucifera) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  7. Saluka/Kamala Kanda (tuber of Nelumbo nucifera) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  8. Mrinala Bisa (Nelumbo nucifera) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  9. Padmaka (Prunus puddum) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  10. Ananta/Yavasa (Alhagi camelorum) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  11. Kusa (Desmostachya bipinnata) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  12. Kasa (Saccharum spontaneum) – 1 tola (12 gms)
  13. Ikshu (Saccharum officinarum) – 1 tola (12 gms)

  1. Tila Taila (Oil of Sesamum indicum) –  1 Prastha (768 litrs)

Preparation of Chandanadi Thailam 

Chandanadi Thailam is prepared according to the oil preparation method as explained in the text. All the ingredients are taken in a specified quantity and first, the decoction is prepared. Once the decoction is ready then other liquid materials along with herbal paste and oil are mixed together. Then this mixture is heated in a mild fire till the oil is properly prepared. Then the oil is filtered and used.

Indications of Chandanadi Thailam

  1. Daha – Burning Sensation
  2. Murcha – Syncope
  3. Shirograha – Stiffness in the head
  4. Kamala – Jaundice
  5. Adhyaroga – Vata medaja roga
  6. Raktapitta – Bleeding diseases
  7. Pradara – Menstrual disorder
  8. Pitta roga – Pitta predominant disease
  9. Visarpa – Herpes

Mode of use:

Chandanadi Thailam is used externally for abhyanga and internally also given. In rare conditions, it is used as Nasya (Nasal medication) depending on the paka of thaila.
